More than 50% of the economic activity in the Dominican Republic occurs in the informal sector such as micro-businesses, small shops, street vendors, fruit stands, etc. Since this sector has no access to, nor support from, the formal banking system, IDDI is providing them with job training and credit in order to strengthen the sector.

IDDI's micro business programs are primarily in the slums of Santo Domingo, and entail identifying potential participants, evaluating them to determine their credit as well as training needs, assisting them with the correct request forms, and follow-up with the appropriate training.

This program focuses on supporting primarily single mothers as this population group tends to be the most poor and marginalized from job opportunities.
